The prostate is part of the male reproductive system and is about the same size and shape as a walnut and weighs about an ounce. The prostate gland is located in the pelvis below the bladder and in front of the rectum, and surrounds the urethra, the tube-like structure that carries urine from the bladder out through the penis. It is made up of glandular tissue and muscle fibers that surround a portion of the urethra. The gland is covered by a membrane (called the prostate capsule) that produces prostate-specific antigen.
